WUNT BE DRUV – A Salute to the Sussex Dialect While researching his book Wunt be Druv for Countryside Books, David interviewed old people around the county who still had traces of the Sussex vernacular on their tongues. These distinctive voices now create a kaleidoscopic folk-memory of a language which has all but gone.

THE GLORY OF THE GARDEN
A reading of Kipling's poem, 'The Glory of the Garden', sits between two celebrations of the gardening life. The first is an interview with the former Radio Brighton/Sussex gardener, Bert Winborne, remembering his days working in the gardens of the old country houses of Sussex. For the second David visited Red Oaks, the home for retired gardeners in Sussex, and hears some colourful tales from a rural world that has vanished.

HE WHO FLEW BY NIGHT Archie Belaney from Hastings, who transformed himself into the Canadian Indian conservationist Grey Owl, is the subject of Bernard Rutherford's audio-biography. The author of several hugely popular books, he transfixed the young princesses Elizabeth and Margaret when he came to England on a lecture tour. The second offering on this disc takes us on a privileged tour of the Charterhouse monastery at Cowfold. Time stands still here: monks who borrow books from the splendid library have to return them . . . within two years!

DEATH OR GLORY
Two Lewes celebrations here. The first throws itself into the 'night of misrule' which is the town's unique bonfire extravaganza, hearing from participants, spectators and a bonfire historian among the tumultuous sound effects. The second is a tour of Harvey's brewery, with head brewer Miles Jenner taking Geoffrey Barlow (a former brewer himself) through the ale-making process.
